Driving to the airport we see a family, inadequately dressed for this cold Maine morning. The young man, woman and small boy, who is pulling a little worn suitcase, are walking briskly by the edge of the road. They are hitch hiking and I watch as we pass.
Returning our rental car at the Jetport the attendant says, "Happy to be going home?" I smile, "Not really, I could always stay one more day!" He solemnly shakes his head. "Too expensive to live here." The rental car agent pipes in, "The taxes are killing me." They vent about the cost of living and not being able to make ends meet, living from paycheck to paycheck. I listen.
Waiting at the gate for our flight I stare at the television screen showing footage of the crisis in Japan. I watch faces, shocked and broken from the overwhelming tragedy.
I feel infinitely helpless and small.
