Trying to be Sugar Free

Husband's boxing coach, well versed on nutrition, reminds Husband at each session "no sugar." We eat a pretty clean diet, lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish and chicken, but Husband does like a cookie. And how do you deny someone who works so hard at being healthy his one indulgence?

I keep a jar of individually wrapped 70% dark chocolates in the pantry. It's medicinal. One recent Parkinson's article suggests eating a small amount of dark chocolate daily will cut inflammation.

But, lets face it, it's hard to sustain saintliness in the food department. There's birthdays and cake. There's holidays and times when you just need a honking piece of pie, just because.

But, try we do. There's always a bowl of fresh berries in the fridge; apples and pears on the counter. Jars of assorted nuts line the cupboard. And for those times when you just need a tiny indulgence, there are Greek yogurt pops in the freezer.

The other day I was coming out of the grocery store, my cart virtuously filled with organic produce, and BPA free lined cans of chick peas and kidney beans, when I passed a table set resplendent with boxes of Girl Scout cookies. I haven't bought those in years. So, in a weak moment I bought five boxes. Husband was thrilled beyond and devoured Thin Mints and Samoas like a man rescued from a desert island. Enough. The fifth box of Savannah Smiles, crispy lemon cookies with a dusting of powdered sugar are going straight to Husband's office come Monday morning as I repent for my indiscretion.

I am the one responsible for what comes in the kitchen. So, back to the business of healthy eating, just as soon as I finish up those Valentine chocolates. Someone has to take one for the team.
