I do love an earnest declaration or two and New Years certainly marks a period for all kinds of self-reflection, which I have been known to do. These usually involve eat more of this, less of that; walk more, lift more (of course, now I have Milo for that!).
So, I have been giving a great deal of thought to ways I could improve upon my lackluster response to thoughtless and inappropriate behavior when it comes my way, which is just a little too frequently for my liking.
Most recently I was saving seats at a tennis exhibition for my son and girlfriend. They had gotten up to get some drinks. I put my rather large pocketbook where my son was sitting and his girlfriend put her lovely pink bag on her seat. Husband was sitting to my right watching some players warming up on the court below when the offense occurred.
A woman jauntily approached our bench, she was smiling and sprightly in manner, and without any hesitation whatsoever picked up the pink bag and placed it behind mine and sat herself down. I stood up and said, very politely, "Someone is sitting there." To which she replied, "Oh, that's ok. And when my mother comes she'll sit on the grass." (There are grassy patches between each bleacher.)
What??? I was absolutely taken aback. I whispered to my husband, who just shook his head in disbelief. Not knowing what to do I sat myself as close to this woman as possible, hoping to avoid her taking up any more real estate. And wouldn't you know it the mother arrives and plops herself down between her daughter and me, as close as she could possibly get without sitting on my lap. Really??? When my son and girlfriend returned I stood to explain the odd scenario which had just taken place. No push over, my son's girlfriend sat next to the woman, holding her ground as we took our seats as well, sitting squished like little sardines for the rest of the match. Could you just scream?
And then there is this...
My brother is in town. I wanted to show him the new house so he could get a before and after. He's here for ten days, vacationing. He must have asked three or four times if he could see the house December 25. I reminded him it was our anniversary and another day would be better. It's the 25th, we are enjoying a lovely, romantic dinner when I get a text, "What's your new house number we are coming up your way now." I forgot to turn my phone off, first mistake. Oy, I text back quickly, "It's gated you can't get in." Aughhhhh....
Anyway, you can see I need to be a little quicker, a littler sharper when faced with the unexpected. I'm not sure how to accomplish this, but I am going to work on it. And like my son's girlfriend, I need to stand my ground. I need a little of the bulldog in me!

| If I'm going to be a bulldog I should be cute and French! |
