Recently we attended a lovely dinner party. The hostess went to great pains to plan an evening of gastronomic delight. From soup to nuts, to dessert, it was a glorious evening. Except for one gentleman, who felt it necessary to keep his cell phone on the table, texting and receiving calls throughout the evening.
Our host and hostess were too kind to voice any objections. I, on the other hand wanted to climb over the chair next to me and rip the phone out of his hand.
His blatant behavior lacked decorum, which only made the rest of us feel invisibly unimportant.
Cell phones should remain off the table. They are not an extension of any of your body parts. And the last time I looked, Emily Post's book of etiquette did not include a phone with her table setting.
Trust me when I say you will enjoy yourself so much more by being present and in the moment with your fellow dinner guests when your phone is safely tucked away. And, if you are so lucky, you may even be invited back.
