Did you know May is National Mental Health Awareness Month? And with only ten days left, we better get cracking. Think about this. We see the dentist twice a year, schedule routine physicals, have our cholesterol and blood pressure checked, along with mammograms and bone density tests. We talk about colonoscopies, but apparently mental health is more uncomfortable to talk about than poop.
So here it is. My anxiety didn't show up overnight. The sneaky little sucker became part of me slowly, meticulously. And about now it's taking all my courage not to post a Cherry Clafoutis recipe from Down East magazine, because that would be so much easier. But, people I am talking!
This year I shut myself off from social activities and made excuses for canceling lunches.
While waiting to have my hair washed at the salon I was overcome with panic and almost bolted with color on my hair. (You don't think this is natural do you?)
Admitting my predicament is strangely empowering. Truth is freeing, my friends. It's not the whole answer, but when we can have conversations about our mental well being as easily as colonoscopies, we've gotten somewhere. There's no crazy in that!
