A Leap!

I called my best friend from high school today.  We haven't spoken in years.  We haven't seen each other in person since we were twenty five years young, not because anything happened, just life and distance.  But, she's been with me as I work on my book, page after page.  It was time.  I stood still as I heard the first ring, held my breath, you never know what you might get after so many years have passed.  There could be all sorts of crazy on the other end, or worse, indifference.

I was prepared for many things, like hanging up if the answering machine came on.  Instead my dear friend answered, arms wide open.

And surprisingly, we talked less about our past and more about our present; our children, husband, parents, illnesses, marriages and births.  We spoke of hot flashes and memory loss, jobs, BPA, organic food and hair color.  Seems my talented friend has been in movies and commercials too.

I explained I was working on a book and for the sake of privacy changed the names of my cast of characters.  I asked what she would like to be called and without skipping a beat she answered, as if she knew I would be asking all along.

Later in the day I received some wonderful emails with pictures of her daughter's wedding and video. I cried tears of joy, happy for how her life has turned out, reveling in the euphoria of "going back home," and being understood, because there's nothing like never having to explain who you are.
